Vandals deprive artist of the tools of his trade
A few months after taking residence on the High Road, William Hogarth has been deprived of his brush by vandals. Last weekend (22nd June) the statue was attacked and somehow the bronze brush was detached from the artist's right hand. According to Hugh Brendon of the Hogarth Millennium Fund, the body responsible for raising funding for the statue, this was not the first incident involving the new landmark. On Jubilee weekend the brushes in the left hand were bent requiring £80 worth of repair work. The latest attack is more serious however with the total bill likely to come to £1,100. The statue was handed over to Hounslow Council following the appeal and was insured against damage. Security around the statue is to be improved to prevent further incidents of this nature occuring. It is likely that the damage caused to the statue would have required quite some time and effort.
