CONSERVATION AREA IN WEST CHISWICK

Residents will have received a letter from Hounslow Council seeking their views about the proposed Thorney Hedge and Turnham Green conservation areas. The letter invited residents to return a form to show if they supported, or opposed, this proposal. Responses need to be returned to the Council by 27 September.

You may well have received leaflets that either support, or opposed, the Council's proposal. This letter aims to clarify what is involved in living in a conservation area and recommends that you support the Council's proposal.

West Chiswick & Gunnersbury Society members agreed at a meeting earlier this year that the area would benefit from conservation status for the following reasons:

  • It imposes extra controls and protection against the persistent applications for new developments in the area i.e. the proposed 28 storey development next to Gunnersbury Station.
  • It provides a stronger protective barrier against unsympathetic developers, who want to demolish buildings for commercial gain - such as the John Bull Public House.
  • Conservation areas usually result in an increase in property values compared with the market values of comparable housing outside the area.
  • It helps to generate a stronger feeling of neighbourhood pride in the area; and increased awareness of its historical and architectural merit.

A conservation area DOES NOT MEAN:

  • The introduction of extra planning controls over existing properties.
  • The imposition of enforced changes to the present features of your property, unless they are unlawful under present planning guidelines.
  • Any changes in the Council's treatment of requests for alterations to your property. Proposed alterations require planning permission, irrespective of whether you live within, or outside, a conservation area (except for minor alterations).
