Chiswick Gunnersbury Councillor Ranjit Gill reports back on his week

December 19, 2022
It only seems like yesterday that I last wrote my blog, but eight weeks comes around quickly when you are busy.
It’s coming to the end of the year and, as I’m an accountant and auditor, this is the busiest time of the year. With accounts due to be filed at Companies House by 31st December for companies with a 31st March year end and then of course the deadline for personal tax returns. Those who miss the deadlines face a penalty. If this applies to you, don’t delay!
Supporting residents
The week started with an evening home visit to a resident living on the Gunnersbury Park Garden Estate. I was accompanied by my colleague Cllr Joanna Biddolph. The issue relates to problems the residents are having with the council’s planning department. It was good to hear the residents’ views and learn more about the issues that remain unresolved.
Otherwise, it was a rather typical week with the usual complaints about fly tipping, problems with blue badge applications, street sweeping, etc. The Hounslow Highways team has been out not only gritting roads but also clearing some of them of detritus which requires a lot of hard scraping to remove compacted leaves and other vegetation. The leaf fall schedule is on the Hounslow Highway's website so you can look up when your road is due to be tackled.
No doubt issues will arise during the festive season. Please don’t hesitate to contact us though we might be a little slower to respond.
Cold weather
The week’s been so cold with minus 6 centigrade recorded where I live. Taking Lulu, my dog, out at 6am every morning has been an ordeal. Frozen hands and ears. It’s no better when I take her out again in the evenings. The heating has been on all day and I wonder what the costs will be this month.

Cllr Gill helping out
On Thursday, 15th December I went to help at Café Together (established by a collective of churches in Hounslow borough) which is run in conjunction with The Hounslow Shelter Project. Café Together offers a free dinner (it’s good food) and a chance , if you want to, to talk through life’s problems. If you , or some one you know, might benefit from a hot meal and a warm welcome, then please do join in as it’s very friendly and everyone is charming.
I have volunteered several times and was delighted to be invited again by Jennifer Corbin, the chairman, a truly delightful lady. I was joined by Mary McLeod, our former MP, and Cllr Peter Thompson, leader of the Conservative group.

This was the last date this year for Café Together but it will be running again in 2023 in Chiswick and Isleworth:
Monday evenings in Chiswick from 9th January to 27th February from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at St Michaels Church, Elmwood Road, Chiswick, W4 3DZ
Wednesday evenings in Isleworth from 11th January to 22nd February from 6.30pm to 8.30pm St John’s Church, St John’s Road, Isleworth, TW7 6NY
Visitors on the day at Hounslow Methodist Church
Warm spaces
I do hope you won’t sit and shiver at home this winter. There are several places in the borough where you can spend time in the warm, often with hot drinks and/or food available and Wi-Fi, so do check the list on the council’s website. It includes the borough’s libraries and leisure centres, many churches, community spaces and sports centres.
Christmas
Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. Stay warm and safe.
