'WW2 Grenade' Causes Security Alert In Chiswick


Residents evacuated from homes and tube stations closed

A major security alert was caused in Chiswick when a suspicious device, later discovered to be a WW2 grenade, was found by railway workers this Tuesday morning (24 October).

Police rushed to the scene and residents in Thornton and Mayfield Avenues, whose homes back onto the railway lines, were evacuated from the area as a precautionary measure.

Police said they were called at 11:58am to reports of a suspected World War Two ordnance near Thornton Avenue.

"Cordons and road closures were put in place; some buildings were evacuated as a precaution.

"The object was removed and taken away to be safely detonated."

Turnham Green Terrace was closed to traffic and both Turnham Green and Stamford Book stations were shut, causing travel disruption.

The incident was over by 2pm and normal service resumed.
