Answers demanded from Hounslow Council over felled trees

Residents in Oxford Gardens objected to Council workmen felling trees on their streets today (Tuesday, January 24th) saying they had not been consulted in advance and there seemed to be no good reason to chop down the cherry blossoms.

Sarah Moir-Morelli told ChiswickW4.com that she was “ heartbroken” to see the tree outside her bedroom window chopped down with just a stump left in place. She said the tree was one of the reasons she has purchased her property as it looked so beautiful in blossom.

“ I saw the workmen arrive and I thought they were doing some sort of maintenance work on the trees but then I heard a loud thud and thought something had dropped. I was shocked when I looked out of the window and saw the tree had been completely chopped down”.

“My son and I have watched the first buds of spring, the first falling leaves each autumn and birds building their nests and feeding their young since he was born twelve years ago. I can honestly say that opening the curtains and looking at that tree every day bought so much pleasure “ said a visibly upset Mrs. Moir- Morelli.

Four women residents remonstrated with the workers and asked them why they were cutting down trees in the street. Some residents parked their cars to prevent workers getting access to other trees due for felling.

Mrs. Moir-Morelli said in the past Oxford Gardens had been full of beautiful trees but every time a dead one had been cut down, it had not been replaced but had been concreted over. This was despite Hounslow Council’s promise on its website that it would replace any felled trees in the borough with a new tree. She said she was emailing the Council to demand a new tree be planted, even though it would take years to be the same size .

ChiswickW4.com has queried Hounslow Council about the tree-felling and is awaiting a reply.
