Dan in action at the Riga tournament
November 17, 2025
A Year 9 pupil from Chiswick School has represented Team GB at a major European fencing competition in Riga, Latvia.
Dan was one of only four athletes selected nationally to wear the British colours at the tournament, an achievement school leaders said reflects his commitment and talent. Competing against some of Europe’s strongest young fencers, he produced a notable performance, including a tense bout in which he recovered from behind to win by a single touch eventually bringing him 15 th place overall.
“Dan’s hard work, focus and determination are an inspiration to our school community,” said Laura Ellener, headteacher at Chiswick School. “We are incredibly proud of his success on the international stage and look forward to seeing what he achieves next.”
The Riga event sits on the continental calendar as an important test for rising fencers, drawing squads from across Europe and offering valuable international experience for cadet and junior athletes. Competitions of this kind are used by national federations to assess talent, give young athletes exposure to different styles of fencing, and help them build the ranking points and match experience that can lead to selection for higher-level events.
