Chiswick School is launching a programme of music scholarships for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Under the scheme, which commences in September 2025, 10 fully funded scholarships will be given to children entering Year 7 who are in receipt of the pupil premium grant. This will mean that extra music lessons will be paid for and these students will have access to a priority place at the school regardless of distance.

It is expected that applications for Year 7 next year will be the highest ever having risen by 275% over the last five years. The school is keen to ensure that it continues to provide opportunities for the less advantaged.

It has developing a reputation for excellence in the performing arts, with the Head of Music being awarded the prestigious Pearson Outstanding New teacher of the year award in 2024.

The school offers a number of musical opportunities including a choral group that was invited to sing at King’s College Cambridge and in January 2025 the group will also sing at Evensong at Eton. The school orchestra is also growing and there are a number of bands who regularly play at local pubs.

Head of Music Zac Moxon said, “We are continuing to grow our musical community but music lessons are often too expensive for families to afford. Our commitment to offer scholarships and fully fund these is unusual in state schools and something we are very excited about.”

Laura Ellener, Headteacher says, “We are delighted that so many local families are choosing Chiswick School, not only for the arts but as a result of the excellent teaching, caring ethos and wide range of opportunities outside the classroom. We have 240 places and last year received over 800 applications. There is a real commitment at the school to support all children regardless of background and this scholarship is one way we can ensure that we are living our values.”

Anyone interested in applying for the music scholarship is encouraged to visit the school for one of their upcoming Open Events - details of which will be available on the school website.

Additional information about the music scholarship is also on the school website and the school is highlighting that they are looking for potential. Children do not already have to play an instrument or sing: the assessment day on 9 October will focus on potential, not existing ability.
