CHISWICK RESIDENTS TO GET BRIEFING ON THIRD RUNWAY

Area Committee Meeting on 25th September to include information session on possible Heathrow expansion

A third runway would probably mean a flightpath directly over Chiswick

Residents will have the opportunity to find out what impact a third runway at Heathrow will have on their lives. Hounslow Council has organised information sessions at the Area Committee meeting to enable local residents to find out more.

Hounslow Council will also be asking residents to give their views on the third runway. Forms will be available at the Area Committee meeting, Chiswick Library and on Hounslow Council’s Website www.hounslow.gov.uk . The results of this survey will be reported back to the Government.

The meet in takes place at 7.30pm on 25th September at Belmont Primary School, Belmont Road.

According to Hounslow Council an additional runway at Heathrow will mean the following:

  • Substantial increase of noise nuisance with new areas in Hounslow coming under the flight path, such as Chiswick and Brentford, and higher levels of noise in areas under the existing flight path due to concentration of larger aircraft.
  • Unacceptable levels of air pollution with an additional 21,000 people being exposed to high nitrogen dioxide.
  • At least 260 properties will be destroyed to build the runway, but many more if the government takes the view that it is acceptable to compulsory purchase properties due to high and therefore unacceptable air pollution levels.
  • Around 230 hectares of Green Belt land would also need to be destroyed.
  • At least two additional rail links are necessary. One through central London to Heathrow and one from the south (Staines) to Heathrow.
  • Part of the A4 will have to be buried in a tunnel to allow aircraft to cross over to the new runway.
  • A third runway may lead to increased employment opportunities, but there is no guarantee that these jobs will go to local people.

In July 2002 the Government began the consultation on the future of air transport with the document ‘Government Consultation on the Future Development of Air Transport in the UK: South East”. This document sets out a number of options for increasing runway capacity in the South East and considers in some detail the possibility of a third runway at Heathrow. The closing date for this consultation is the 30th November 2002.

If people are concerned about the ending of runway alternation or the possibility of a third runway at Heathrow they can write to Mike Fawcett, Aviation Division, DETR, 72 Marsham St,SW1, with a copy to the Aviation Minister, David Jamieson, Eland House, Bressenden Place, SW1.
