The Chiswick Repair Café celebrated its third anniversary on Saturday (25 October) with bunting, homemade cake, and a visit from the Mayor of Hounslow, Cllr Amy Croft, who praised the initiative as a model of community spirit and environmental action.

Held at Christ Church on Turnham Green, the event brought together volunteers, residents and supporters to mark three years of monthly repair sessions that have helped keep over 2,000 items in use—from household appliances and toys to clothing and jewellery.

Mayor Croft commended the group’s impact, saying, “What a fantastic community initiative. You walk in the room and it is a buzz. It’s just full of benefits—getting people really engrossed in fixing things and proud of their work, tackling loneliness, saving items from landfill and addressing the cost of living crisis.”

Four volunteers were honoured for their contributions: Thora and Stefanie were celebrated for keeping the team fuelled with coffee and cake; Neal received recognition for perfect attendance at repair sessions and Peter was awarded “Best Accessory” for his signature braces.

Founded in 2023 as part of the global Repair Café movement, which began in the Netherlands in 2009, the Chiswick branch has become a local fixture. It offers free repairs, refreshments, and a welcoming space for residents to share skills and reduce waste.

Beyond the practical benefits, organisers say the café fosters intergenerational learning and community resilience. Each repair not only diverts waste from landfill but also strengthens local ties and promotes resourcefulness.

Monthly sessions continue at Christ Church, Turnham Green, with volunteers on hand to help fix broken items and offer advice. Residents are encouraged to drop in, whether they have something to mend or simply want to enjoy a cup of tea and a chat.
