A major refurbishment of one of Chiswick’s most architecturally significant buildings is being planned.

Grade II listed Voysey House on Barley Mow Passage is to be renovated with the façade cleaned repaired and appointed and non-original additions to the building removed. The aim is to bring it back as close as possible to its condition after it was completed.

The steel roller shutters at ground floor level will be removed and replaced with glazed panels and a new lift will be installed to provide step free access to all floors. When finished the building will continue to provide office space.

Voysey House was completed in 1902 and originally designed as a wallpaper factory by the renowned Arts and Crafts designer C.F.A Voysey. Since a fire at the adjacent factory on the other side of Barley Mow Passage in 1928 the industrial building was developed into offices and has operated in this capacity since.

The project is being undertaken by Dorrington Plc which acquired the freehold of the building in September 2020 from a consortium of architects and engineers who had previously owned and occupied it. The building is set to be fully vacated in October.

Dorrington is a privately owned property investment and development company founded in 1939. It is based in Knightsbridge in two Voysey designed townhouses which the company says has given it a strong appreciation for Voysey’s work and the Art & Crafts movement generally. Dorrington is the only corporate member of The Voysey Society which uses its offices for meetings. Voysey House is the latest commercial building to have been added to its long-term portfolio.

The materials used will aim to be as closely in line with the original Voysey design as possible. The elevated walkway that used to link the building with Sanderson House shown in the picture above is not being restored.

The project is estimated to cost up to £2 million.
