'Chiswick Beach' Proposal Withdrawn
Plan was for houseboats and leisure facilities by Strand on the Green

An application to build a mixed river leisure facility by Strand on the Green has been withdrawn. The development which was dubbed ‘Chiswick Beach’ was to have included ten new moorings for houseboats as well as facilities for water sports and a club house with café and restaurant. The applicant says that the withdrawal represents a postponement rather than an outright abandonment of the plan.
The scheme was entirely on water and therefore the application was made to the Port of London Authority (PLA). The organisation behind it claimed the enthusiastic support of Hounslow Council but this was never confirmed.
It was to be located just east of Kew Bridge and stretch to the small park opposite the Café Rouge restaurant. Permission had been requested for installation of piles, pontoons and moorings in the area that used to be called Ball’s Wharf and was formerly used for river related commerce.
The proposals met with a mixed response from local sports clubs and outright opposition from the Strand on the Green Residents’ Association who objected on a number of grounds including the impact the scheme would have on the nearby conservation area and possible negative effects on the ecology of the foreshore.
Environomics Consultants who drafted the report in favour of the application told us, "This is a postponement to properly address the issues raised by the PLA.
Most of the issues raised within the consultation were not related to, or disparate from the project submitted."
