Energy supplier EDF Energy has unveiled a festive marketing campaign offering customers eight hours of free electricity on Christmas Day, brought to life by transforming a real home in Chiswick into a spectacular light display on St. Mary's Grove.
EDF customers are to receive free electricity from 8am to 4pm on Christmas Day, a period when household energy use typically peaks. The company said the offer was designed to help families enjoy the day without worrying about energy costs, while also drawing attention to its wider “Sunday Saver” tariff, which encourages customers to shift usage away from peak times.
EDF said households consume an estimated 65 kilowatt-hours of electricity on Christmas Day — around seven times the daily average — driven by the cooking of an estimated 14 million turkeys, the use of billions of festive lights and even the preparation of special meals for pets.
To promote the offer, EDF worked with creative agency Lucky Generals and media agency Havas Media to stage a real-world installation. A corner house in Chiswick was temporarily covered in thousands of lights bearing the slogan “This Christmas Day, electricity is on the house”. The installation was open to the public over the weekend of 13–14 December before being featured in the company’s advertising and social media campaign.
EDF said the display was deliberately literal, with the phrase “on the house” serving as both a festive pun and a physical demonstration of the offer. The company stressed that the installation used no CGI or artificial effects, with the property genuinely illuminated to reflect the scale of Christmas Day electricity use.
