A murder investigation is under way after a woman was fatally stabbed inside a residential property on Askew Road on Tuesday morning. Police were called at 08:19 on 18 August to reports of a stabbing at an address near the junction with Bassein Park Road.

Officers arrived alongside the London Ambulance Service and found two women, aged 52 and 32, suffering from stab wounds. Despite efforts by paramedics and London’s Air Ambulance team, the 52‑year‑old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her family has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers.

The younger woman was taken to hospital, where her injuries are still being assessed. Police say they are awaiting an update on her condition.

A 48‑year‑old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. He was taken to hospital as a precaution before being discharged into police custody, where he remains.

Detective Inspector Richard MacKenzie, who is leading the investigation, said officers were working quickly to establish what happened inside the property. He described the incident as “deeply tragic” and acknowledged the concern it would cause locally. He said officers would remain in the area throughout the day and urged anyone with information, CCTV or doorbell footage to come forward.

Askew Road remains partially cordoned off while forensic teams continue their work. Emergency services were heavily concentrated in the area throughout the morning, with London’s Air Ambulance landing in Wendell Park to assist.

Police are asking anyone with information to call 101 quoting reference 1673/18AUG. Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers.
