Chiswick's Covid-19 Death Toll Continues To Rise
More fatalities reported as virus returns to the W4 area
Surge testing has been deployed in other parts of London when new variants are detected
The latest release of official figures on deaths from Covid-19 shows that 6 more people have died in the Chiswick area.
The data from the Office of National Statistics for March brings the total number of fatalities within the W4 postcode to 63.
There have now been nearly as many deaths locally in the second wave of the pandemic during 2021 as there were last year and local medical professionals expect the number to continue to rise although they are hoping it will be more slowly.
One Chiswick-based GP commented, “Even if no more people contract the disease from now we are still going to see more deaths of those who have been infected earlier. What goes uncounted is the number of people who have lost their lives due to delayed surgery or other medical help. That may already be exceeding those taken by the virus in recent months.
“The big danger remains complacency so the reminder of those we have lost is timely. Although the vaccine will save lives, a resurgence of the disease cannot be ruled out if people start to ignore the guidelines on protecting their health and the health of others.”
Having seen no cases reported within a week in the Chiswick earlier this month, nine people have now tested positive for Covid-19 in the area in the week to 22 April with the Chiswick North West area (which includes Acton Green) worse affected.

There is no evidence as yet that the gradual relaxation of lockdown rules is leading to a large increase in new cases. Even in boroughs such as Wandsworth, where surge testing has taken place with over 180,000 PCR tests distributed due to fears over the South African variant, there has not been a significant rise in the infection rate.
Hounslow remains the London borough with the highest infection rate with 42 cases per 100,000 population. Ealing borough has the fourth highest rate at 36.
On 27 April the daily number of new people tested positive for Covid-19 in London was reported as 401.
The total number of Covid-19 cases identified in London is 718,626 as at 26 April, this compares to 3,852,904 cases for England as a whole.
In the week to 22 April, 2,262 cases were identified in London, a rate of 25 cases per 100,000 population. This compares with 2,128 cases and a rate of 24 for the previous week.
In the same period, 14,181 cases were identified in England as a whole, a rate of 25 cases per 100,000 population. This compares with 14,659 cases and a rate of 26 for the previous week.
Up to and including 18 April 2021 3,405,280 people in London had received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 1,070,261 had received two doses.
