Chiswick-based film actor Colin Firth, and his wife the eco-fashion campaigner Livia Giuggioli, have publicly announced that they are separating.

They had been married for over twenty years and have two children.

A statement said, "They maintain a close friendship and remain united in their love for their children. They kindly ask for privacy. There will be no further comment.”

The announcement comes two years after newspaper reports when Livia Firth claimed she had been stalked by a man she had an affair with while she and Firth were separated.

She eventually dropped charges against the alleged stalker. Marco Brancaccia, a childhood friend, who had denied that he had bombarded her with threatening phone calls and text messages after the relationship ended.

Newspaper reports suggested the couple dropped the charges as they did not want details of their private life becoming public. A court hearing in Rome was cancelled when an agreement between all parties was reached.

Livia Giuggioli, who is Italian, is a film producer, an Oxfam ambassador and founder of the former Eco Age shop in Chiswick, as well as being an advocate of sustainable clothing.
