Transport for London (TfL) has launched a public consultation on proposed changes to bus services in the Barnes and Chiswick areas, aiming to formalise temporary arrangements introduced after the closure of Hammersmith Bridge to motor traffic in 2019.
Under the proposals, route 209 would be extended to take over the majority of route 533, which would be withdrawn. Route 533 was introduced as a temporary service to maintain step-free access between Hammersmith bus station and Barnes following the bridge closure. The extended 209 would continue to serve stops in Chiswick on the A316 and maintain a direct connection to Hammersmith, preserving access for passengers who currently rely on route 533.
TfL is also proposing changes to routes 378 and 485, although all other bus services in the Barnes area would remain unchanged. These changes are intended to better match service levels with current demand and to provide greater certainty for passengers, given that Hammersmith Bridge is unlikely to reopen to motor traffic in the near future.
TfL states that it continues to monitor bus usage and believes the revised network would ensure that most customers can still reach their destinations reliably.
In addition to service adjustments, TfL has been working with Richmond Council to address concerns raised by residents in the Castelnau area about high volumes of buses on residential streets. The proposed changes are designed to help reduce this pressure while maintaining essential connectivity.
