Council corrects erroneous Chiswick Back Common sign
Chiswick residents need no longer do a double-take when crossing the Back Common - Hounslow Council have now erected the proper sign for the area.
Contractors had originally put up a sign saying 'Welcome to Turnham Green' which is at the other end of Chiswick.
Bemused locals had speculated the confusion might have arisen due to the proximity of Turnham Green tube station to Chiswick Back Common, the stretch of green that is at the back of Marks and Spencer and Fisher's Lane. The actual area known as Turnham Green is the patch of green on either side of Christ Church on the High Road.
The misplacement gave rise to a good deal of amusement and one councillor described it as "embarrassing".
After locals phoned the Council to alert them of their mistake, a sticker was placed across the sign , pending its removal.
A spokesman for Hounslow Council said the contractor had been instructed to take down the incorrect sign.
