Last Sunday I had the pleasure of attending both the POSK Picnic and the Windrush Blockorama. It was great to be at the opening of the picnic, put on by the Polish social and cultural association.
The picnic took place in Ravenscourt Park and was organised to mark 80 years since the end of World War Two. The event had games, performances by music and dance groups, as well as plenty of delicious Polish food.
The 22nd of June was Windrush day, and what better way to spend it than at the Windrush Blockorama later in the afternoon. The event was a wonderful celebration of Caribbean culture with brilliant music as well as storytelling and more delicious food. It was a lovely afternoon and great to see so many people out to celebrate and honour the Windrush generation.
On Monday, after the news that the situation in the Middle East had intensified with American strikes on Iran, the Foreign Secretary made a statement to the House. I asked a question about what this escalation means for the UK.
This week I also led the Estimates Day debate on the spending of the Ministry of Justice. Estimates Day debates are a chance for backbench MPs to debate how the Government intends to spend public money. As Chair of the Justice Select Committee, I have a special interest in the budget of the Ministry of Justice. You can read the full debate here.
As an update on the development of Gunnersbury station, I remain supportive of improvements to the station but objected to the latest planning applications as it did not meet the needs of the community. It is a major development and would be a missed opportunity if the station is not improved for both step-free access and capacity. I continue to monitor the outstanding application which is due to be considered by the Planning Committee later this year.
