Grove Park's St. Michael's Players’ October production is ‘Comic Potential’ by popular playwright Alan Ayckbourn.

Described as "a comedy of ideas and emotion", it will be presented on Thursday-Saturday, October 25, 26 and 27, at 7.45 pm at St. Michael's Centre, Elmwood Road, W4 3DZ.

The play is set in the foreseeable future, when everything has changed except human nature. It is a future where TV daytime soaps are churned out to massive audiences, performed by android actors emotionally programmed by the control room.

One of these, JCF 31333, finds herself becoming humanised as Jacie Triplethree, complete with a sense of humour, a commodity not deemed of value in the future world. After Adam Trainsmith, a young scriptwriter determined to bring back classic comedy, falls for her, much confusion ensues, with comic results.

The play originated from the idea that the ability to laugh and the ability to fall in love are both characteristics that differentiate humans from androids - both illogical from an objective viewpoint - raising the question as to whether either of the actions in an android would be considered a malfunction. The comedy also explores the competing desires for autonomy and certainty.
