Hounslow council has recently installed its first on-street bike hangar in Chiswick at Ashbourne Grove and has received a further request from several residents on Silver Crescent. The facility costs £72 a year for a space.

Bike hangars offer secure cycle parking for residents in areas where the ability to safely store bikes within a property, or within the front/rear garden, is limited.

The Council says this is part of its commitment to encourage more sustainable forms of transport for daily journeys.

The proposed location of the bikehangar is at the southern end of Silver Crescent, opposite Chiswick Court (1A Silver Crescent) and to the side of No.596 Chiswick High Road.

The hanger is 2.5m long and just under 2.0m wide and each hangar provides storage for 6 bikes. Further information can be found on the Cyclehoop website.

While the council covers the installation cost of new bikehangars via an annual grant allocation from Transport for London to increase cycle parking provision in the borough, there is a rental fee per year of £72 per space, plus a deposit for a key (£25). The allocation of spaces is managed by the council’s contractor, Cyclehoop, who also provide ongoing maintenance.

The hangar is proposed to be located on existing double yellow lines and will therefore not remove any car parking spaces.

A consultation is currently online with a deadline of Friday 22 November.
