From Bollywood to brass bands at the Cultural finale

Over 6,000 people turned out at Dukes Meadows bandstand in Chiswick on Sunday (9 September) to enjoy a range of activities and entertainment as part of the closing event for the 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

The Bandstand came alive with a medley of amazing performances, including Indian folk and Bollywood music, the Barnes concert band, Alanka Jewels Bollywood Choir, Central Harmony Choir, electro pop band Kit Richardson,  the fabulous swing patrol, Mimika and Brassroots, who all wowed the crowds with their impressive grooves.

Revellers also enjoyed performances and workshops on the big dance bus with charismatic dance moves, Garba dancing and chair dancing performed by Age UK Hounslow, Bounce Theatre and Scottish Country Dancing. Families were also able to take part in dance workshops before joining a samba parade all the way to the Bandstand with Rhythms of the City and a life-size puppet for a carnival finale.

Hounslow libraries provided storytelling, drumming and instrument-making workshops and also ran magical sing-along song shows. 

Cllr Ruth Cadbury, Hounslow’s lead member for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics said: “This closing event for the Cultural Olympiad was a fantastic opportunity for musicians to showcase their talent to their local community and feel they were truly playing a part in London 2012. ”

The Bandstand Marathon was part of the largest closing cultural event of London 2012, a spectacular 12-week nationwide celebration from 21 June to 9 September, bringing together leading artists from across the world with the very best from the UK.  The event in Dukes Meadows was one of 500 bandstand marathons which took place across the country on Sunday.
