Getting Ready For The Chiswick Timeline

Turnham Green Terrace to be transformed as work starts to put the mural in place

Installation kicked off this week on the Chiswick Timeline as workers started to place the murals on the walls under the railway bridge at Turnham Green Terrace. Jon Perry has posted a wonderful selection of photographs on our forum.

It's full steam ahead now with the launch party (which is free, and open to the public), on Sunday, January 28th, when local residents will be able to see the mural in all its glory. Sir Peter Blake is expected to open the event, and some of the artists who contributed to the project will attend. (More details of the launch at a later date)

A large lorry and a couple of vans, arrived earlier this week disgorging a team of workers and a load of pale blue metal frameworks. They will be working every night this week and the following week.

The technical problems with the inserted artworks have still not been resolved, but they will be installing the first panels vinyl place holders (so they will look nearly perfect), and as soon as they have sorted the inserts (probably after the launch party!), Links will remove the affected panels and redo the inserts.

On the day of the party, Turnham Green Terrace will be closed to traffic. There will be two participatory artworks for everyone to get involved in, as well as the launch of the commemorative book of the project. There will be live music and lots of treats, including special biscuits.

The mural launch is the culmination of an ambitious project to transform the area which has been an eyesore for many years. Abundance London first proposed this project several years ago, and it took time and persistence to get permission from TfL to create a mural and to sort out local sponsorship. Over 27 metres long, 2.5m high, this will be a landmark piece of public art.

There will be a timeline of historic maps showing the development of Chiswick through the centuries, with works of art depicting local landmarks by some of the artists who live and work in our area.

Chiswick councillors, through the Chiswick Area Forum, helped Abundance get S106 funding from Hounslow Council for the project. Southfield ward councillors have given their backing with a grant. Contributions have also been made from Transport for London. You can also get updates from the Chiswick Timeline web site and the Abundance London Twitter page.
