Traffic measures part of Mayor's plan to reduce fatalities on the road
Hounslow Council is preparing to extend the 20 MPH speed limit zone across Chiswick, as part of borough and citywide measures to cut deaths and serious injuries on the roads.
The Council has been introducing 20 mph zones across the borough, including Chiswick High Road and side streets, on a phased basis, over the past two years. It started with a 20 mph limit around schools and surrounding streets which was put in place by the end of 2017.
The implementation of the speed limit to residential streets across the borough was given a four year timetable and this move is to make progress with that plan.
In September, Transport for London (TfL) announced that work would begin to make 8.9km of TfL roads subject to the new speed limit, as part of the Mayor's Vision Zero commitment to eliminate death and serious injury from London's roads. TfL is now working with boroughs and local communities on the next phase of lower speeds for outer London
Hounslow Council has now published its Traffic Management order proposing the 20 MPH limit around the Chiswick area and public comments are invited- the deadline is January 8th 2020. Documents giving further information of the proposed Order can be viewed for a period of 35 days from the date of this Notice: online by typing in the term “traffic notices” in the search bar or at Customer service reception, Hounslow House, 7 Bath Road, Hounslow, TW3 3EB, between the hours of 9am and 4.45pm, Mondays to Fridays.
Any person wishing to object to the proposed Order should send a statement in writing stating the grounds of the objection to the Assistant Director Transport. Parking & Environmental Strategy at the address above, or by email to trafficorders@hounslow.gov.uk quoting the reference TMO/P051/19 to be received by no later than Wednesday, 8 January 2020.
While there is general agreement that the speed limit is a good idea, local residents and Community Watch volunteers taking road surveys, have complained that there is little enforcement, and that motorists regularly ignore it.
The list of roads can be read on this image or on the Hounslow Council website.
Transport for London (TfL) is also extending the 20 MPH limit to roads within the congestion charge zone in central London by early 2020.
The lower speed limit will be supported by new 20mph signage and road markings, as well as raised pedestrian crossings in seven locations where a high number of people walk, including near Embankment and Tower Hill Tube stations and outside the Tate Britain.
TfL will recalibrate all speed cameras in central London and use mobile speed cameras to ensure that drivers are complying with the new safer speed limit. TfL aims to complete work overnight to minimise the impact on road users and will use single lane closures, avoiding any roads being fully closed, subject to permits.
The move is a key part of the Mayor's Vision Zero ambition to eliminate death and serious injury from London's transport network and will see 20mph limits introduced on 8.9km of main roads including Millbank, Albert Embankment, Victoria Embankment and Borough High Street. More than a third (39 per cent) of streets in London now have a 20mph speed limit and the Mayor and TfL are hoping this will continue to reduce road danger and provide consistency for drivers.
