New proposals for Kew Bridge site

Developers make changes but protests continue

Developers St George have resubmitted their plans to build on the 'Scottish Widows' site adjacent to Kew Bridge. The original plans met with unpopularity from local residents, conservation groups and politicians who claimed that the plans were too dense and not in keeping with the historic riverside character of the area.

However the new plans are proving to be just as unpopular. The number of housing units remain the same at 236 (although the percentage of affordable housing provision rises from 30 to 40%) and there will be a larger public square fronting onto the Thames. There is little difference to the height of the buildings, although there will be more open space to the east side of the new development, alongside Kew Bridge.

Since the original plans were submitted, the area has been designated a Conservation Area, which is likely to impact on the design of the buildings. Brentford Community Council Chair Andrew Dakers has called for a world-class architect to lead the design, expressing concerns about the area's ability to absorb such a large development.

Detailed plans of the development are available in public libraries and will appear shortly on www.brentfordTW8.com.
