Attacked member of the public and fellow officer
PC Robert Roberts has been jailed after being found guilty of two counts of common assault. The 33 year old officer who was based in Hounslow Borough was sentenced to 12 weeks imprisonment after he attacked a member of the public and a fellow officer. In addition he was ordered to the pay the member of the public £250 in compensation.
On 20th April last year PC Roberts was paired with another male PC on route to a call, when in Lower Square, Isleworth he stopped to deal with a male member of the public he felt had breached the Public Order Act.
As PC Roberts attempted to arrest the man a struggle ensued and the member of the public received minor facial injuries. Following the arrest, PC Roberts then complained to his colleague about his alleged lack of assistance and assaulted him by pushing him over.
The arrested man was later released with no further action. He made informal allegations to the duty Inspector against PC Roberts regarding the injuries he had sustained during his arrest. The incident was brought to the attention of the Borough Commander, who in turn referred the case to the Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS). The DPS began an investigation and interviewed all those involved, including police officers and members of the public who witnessed the incident.
