Council Urged To Act on Swyncombe Avenue Traffic

Congestion believed to be caused by displacement from Ealing LTNs

Calls are increasing for Hounslow Council to take action over the current traffic situation on Swyncombe Avenue which is seeing high levels of congestion on a regular basis.

Many people living on and around the road are blaming the implementation of Low Traffic Neighbourhood schemes (LTNs) by Ealing Council in adjacent streets. It is believed that these schemes are responsible for the queues being seen on Swyncombe Avenue which is the responsibility of Hounslow Council.

One resident of a nearby road said, “The notion of a Low Traffic Neighbourhood is basically Orwellian doublespeak. There is no such thing as these schemes merely displace traffic somewhere else. Great if you live on a road where cars are being diverted away from, but terrible if it is your road they are now heading to. The displacement has an inevitable knock on effect just as controlled parking zones did meaning than they become more likely in adjacent areas. As long as the Ealing schemes remain in place I don’t see an alternative to a closure at some point on Swyncombe Avenue although it could be argued that will just shift the problem elsewhere.”

Some people living in the area say Hounslow should make representations to Ealing to scrap their nearby LTNs.

Other residents argue that a closure of Swyncombe Avenue would not be the solution and say that part of the problem is the roadworks on South Ealing Road and Culmington Road as well as on Boston Manor Road.

Hounslow Council have identified the Swyncombe Avenue area as a location in which road closures could take place and feasibility studies are being undertaken by borough engineers.

A map produced by borough traffic engineers to be presented to the cabinet shows that an LTN is planned to the south of Swyncombe Avenue and the road wouldn’t be part of the zone which suggests it is seen a distributor road onto which more traffic could be diverted.

A spokesperson told us, “At the moment potential changes to the route are being assessed.”

A significant increase in the number of LTNs in the borough is being proposed but funding for all the schemes the council would like to implement.
