A local councillor has made the claim that the river and canalside area is on the cusp of being transformed into a ‘Mini-Venice’ as the earlier stages of the Ballymore development reach completion.

Guy Lambert invited his fellow councillors at this Tuesday’s meeting of Hounslow Council to come down to the area and see how it was being transformed.

‘A lot of the development that we are doing in Brentford is turning it from an old town with very little access to the river and canal into what will be the far west version of mini-Venice.”

The improved access to the area promised by the developer is being delivered with new walking routes being opened by the canals and the Thames Path running directly along the river at more points.

New businesses are already starting to set up in the area with Sam’s Coffee House already serving residents. Owner Sam Harrison, who also operates Sam’s Riverside restaurant in Hammersmith and Sam’s Larder which recently opened in Chiswick, told us that this latest venture was only ‘loosely’ opened at this stage and would be closer to completion in about two weeks’ time. A restaurant is also being planned in the area opposite the café overlooking the new Workhouse Dock.

Ballymore has said that a range of well known companies are planning openings in the commercial space within the development including Pret, Boots and Specsavers.

The location for Morrisons is also taking shape with fitting out of the new store due to begin early next year. The residents of Venice will have to wait much longer for their branch of Morrisons to open.
