Plea To Open Loos in the Oaks Shopping Centre

Facilities in the arcade are kept locked most of the time

A petition has been started asking the management of the Oaks Shopping Centre to keep the toilet facilities in the arcade open most of the time.

Since the new centre opened in 2016, the toilets are kept locked but can be opened by a member of the security staff on request but shoppers say they often can't be found when most needed.

Community campaigner Maire Lowe, who initiated the petition, said, “This is difficult for families with small children, older and disabled persons amongst others. The nearest public facilities are in Morrisons supermarket. That is too far away for shoppers at the Oaks. We are politely asking for Oaks Management to review its policy immediately and open its facilities.”

At the time of writing the petition had very quickly reached 187 signatures with its next goal being 200. Numerous comments have been made by signatories in support of the proposal including those from people with mobility issues and parents of neuro-divergent children for whom the facility would be invaluable.

We have contacted the management of the shopping centre for a comment and await a response.

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.
