Children see how charity provides 74,000 meals a month to people in need
Ark Byron pupils get the message about City Harvest
The Ark Byron Academy, a stone’s throw away from City Harvest’s Acton depot, is working in partnership with the food charity this academic year.
The local primary school got involved with City Harvest Festival with the intent to educate students about food waste, poverty, and redistribution upon the festival’s launch on the UN’s International Awareness Day for Food Loss and Waste.
The children have visited the facility to learn how the organisation seeks to provide other charities across Ealing with meals to distribute to those in need.
Since 2014 City Harvest has delivered nutritious surplus food for an average of 74,000 meals a month, (worth £146,352), stretching their budgets to offer life-changing services to those less fortunate. Various organisations in Ealing, City Harvest’s home borough, are celebrating Harvest Festival in collaboration with the food redistribution charity this Autumn, including Ark Byron Academy.
City Harvest Senior Food Sourcing Manager, Dan McAlpine, says, “This Harvest Festival, we have had an urgent need for ambient food items to redistribute to our recipient projects as we head into Winter. Support from our local community, especially the efforts of Ark Byron students, really helps to make a difference. Thank you.”
Ark Byron Academy Assistant Principal, Max Etherton added, “Ark Byron Primary Academy has partnered with City Harvest for the 2021-2022 academic school year to support the charity’s life-changing impact across London. City Harvest is local to our primary school in Acton, therefore donations from our fantastic school community would be a meaningful gesture towards helping those less fortunate this Harvest Festival.
“Our school shares City Harvest’s commitment to sustainability and community values. We also focus on minimising our carbon footprint to educate the children about climate change. Over the coming year, Ark Byron Primary Academy looks forward to collaborating with City Harvest, to educate our pupils and families further with their delivery of knowledge to combat food waste and support making a difference to millions of people within London.”
