Acton Swimming Pool - Work Begins

New complex expected to open in April 2014

Work's started on the massive transformation of Acton Town Hall.

The new £18m leisure and community complex, in Acton High Street will feature a gym, library, pool, space for community groups to hire and council offices.

The much loved Acton Swimming Baths - built in 1904 - is being demolished as part of the programme. Residents have expressed anger that it's being knocked down and say it shows a lack of vision from Ealing Council.

Robert Gurd from Ealing Civic Society says they have held many meetings about the Town Hall development and managed to retain the iconic frontage along with the chimney.

'' We have been talking to the Council about both the interior and exterior designs. There have been improvements particularly since English Heritage got involved earlier in the year: nevertheless, the front elevation remains more sympathetic to its surroundings (mainly because the existing facades remain largely unchanged) than the new-build rear.

''The external designs are now fixed except for some detailed elements but we still hope that some elements of the original building, in particular the Kings Rooms, can be incorporated in the new building.''

The new pool will be shorter than the current one but will have eight lanes instead of four.

A council spokesperson said: "As promised, work has started on transforming Acton Town Hall into modern centre for the local community. The old Acton Baths is being replaced with two new pools, one of which will have a moveable floor improving access for people with disabilities, and a large modern gym.

"We are planning to open the new centre in April 2014 and we hope that when local people see the finished result, they will hold it in as much affection as they did the old baths."
